This is what I call a "moistpack". Good for storing and
germinating some seeds. Keep the seeds in a ziplock plastic bag, in moist
vermiculite in the fridge for weeks or months. Move to roomtemperature.
Some seeds might even germinate in the fridge. Detta kallar jag "moistpack". Fröerna förvaras i fuktad vermiculit i kylskåpet. Låt dem ligga i kylen minst 6-8 veckor och tag sedan fram dem i rumstemperatur. Fungerar på bl.a paeonia, Glaucidium m fl. En del gror t.o.m. i kylen. |

Some seeds have a tail that sometimes can inhibit the
germination. I stick them into the soil with the tails up - see photo.
Exemples: Pulsatilla En del frön har en "svans". Denna sägs kan försvåra groningen. Jag sticker ner fröerna med svansen ovan jord och detta fungerar utmärkt. Pulsatillafröer är ett exempel på frö med svans. |

Coldtreatment, stratisfication, wintersowing... How you do this depends on where you live. Up in my area we have snow. I dig the pots into the snow and let the nature do its job. At least 6-8 weeks of stratisfication is said to be the best. If you don´t have cold climate, I guess that the fridge is the best way of simulating winterconditions like ours. Köldbehandling, stratisfiering.... |

Fast germinating seeds....ooops - where do I keep them?
Some perennials does not like temperatures above +20°C directly after germination. I keep those seedlings in the garage under fluorecent light. The temperature in the garage is about +10° to +15°C. This is a good method for Meconopsis and lots of Primulas. Snabbt groende fröer

Greenhouse or not? I have a very small greenhouse, not matter the size, it will always be crowded... I keep the seedlings in here during april/may. The greenhouse can give better light for the plants. I also move the seedlings from the garage, but into coolest area of the greenhouse (the floor). In my area we have degrees below zero Celsius until the beginning of June, so I have to heat the greenhouse to keep it from freezing temperatures. Växthus eller inte? |

Lots of seedlings.... Well, as a gardener I always have more seedlings than space ; ) My husband made me a coldframe. The coldframe is good for storing seedlings during the winter and also good in late spring. It is not heated, but keeping seedlings away from some frost. If very cold I cover the roof with a carpet to prevent severe freezing. A single lightbulb is also said to be heating enough, but I have not tried. För många fröplantor....

Seedlings falling and die in the pots? Common problem, caused by Sciaria thomae, small black flies. The larvae is hatching in the soil and it is eating the roots. The small seedlings looks like they are falling onto the soil for no reason. Do not overwater the pots, because they like wet soil. Buy the yellow labels with glue, and put them on sticks around the pots. This will detect the flies and they will get stuck so they can´t lay any eggs. Larger seedlings - try pyrethrium (Pyrex). Småplantorna faller och dör i

Home made Mini greenhouse. This is good for keeping seedlings in. Mostly for annuals before starting the real greenhouse. Also good for sowing cactiseeds like Opuntia, that needs moisture to germinate. The plastic boxes are used for candy in the supermarkets, at least in Sweden. You can get them for free.
